The History of Seagull

Seagull (Sea-Gull) is China's oldest and largest mechanical watch manufacturer, producing millions of movements annually. They supply countless brands while building their own reputation for affordable complications including tourbillons.

Tianjin Origins

Seagull was founded in 1955 in Tianjin as state-owned enterprise during early Communist industrialization. Their first movement came in 1958—China's first domestically produced mechanical watch movement, establishing national watchmaking capability.

Learning from Swiss

Early Seagull movements were essentially copies of Swiss designs—ETA, Peseux, and others. This reverse engineering, common in developing manufacturing, provided foundation for eventual independent development.

ST19 Column Wheel Chronograph

The ST19 chronograph movement—based on Venus 175—became Seagull's most famous product. This column wheel chronograph offers mechanical excellence at fraction of Swiss chronograph prices. Countless microbrands use ST19 movements.

Movement Supplier

Seagull supplies movements to brands worldwide. Many affordable mechanical watches—whether disclosed or not—contain Seagull movements. They've become the budget alternative to ETA and Miyota.

Tourbillon Production

Seagull produces mechanical tourbillons for under $1,000—unthinkable in Swiss watchmaking. Quality debates aside, they democratized complications previously reserved for six-figure watches.

1963 Air Force Chronograph

The "1963" reissue honors Chinese Air Force chronographs originally produced for pilots. With column wheel chronograph movement and vintage styling, it became cult favorite among enthusiasts seeking affordable mechanical chronographs.

Quality Debates

Seagull quality is debated: some movements perform well for years; others have issues. Quality control varies by movement and production run. At the price point, many consider occasional issues acceptable trade-off.

Domestic Market

Within China, Seagull produces watches under their own brand, including complicated pieces demonstrating manufacturing capability. These domestic market pieces often feature decoration and finishing beyond export movements.

Seagull Today

Seagull remains essential player in affordable mechanical watchmaking. Their movements power countless brands; their own watches offer extraordinary value. For accessible mechanical complications, Seagull delivers what Swiss prices make impossible.
