The History of Mondaine

You've seen the design in every Swiss train station: bold black markers, clean white dial, distinctive red seconds hand with lollipop tip. Mondaine brought this iconic Swiss Railways clock to wristwatches, creating one of the most recognizable designs in horology.

The Railways Clock

In 1944, Swiss Federal Railways engineer Hans Hilfiker designed a clock for train stations. His requirements: instant legibility from any distance and angle. The result—bold minute marks, thick hands, clean white face—became a design icon installed across Switzerland's rail network.

The distinctive seconds hand pauses at 12 o'clock for roughly 1.5 seconds, allowing station clocks to synchronize. This characteristic pause identifies genuine Swiss Railways design.

Mondaine's License

Mondaine, a Swiss watch company founded in 1951 by Erwin Bernheim, acquired the license to reproduce the Swiss Railways clock design on wristwatches in 1986. This licensing agreement created Mondaine's signature product and transformed a regional watchmaker into a globally recognized brand.

Design Icon Status

The Swiss Railways watch achieved design icon status. Museum collections, design awards, and widespread recognition followed. The watch's appeal transcends horology—it represents Swiss design principles: clarity, functionality, and understated elegance.

Apple Incident

In 2012, Apple used a clock design remarkably similar to Mondaine's on the iPad. Switzerland noticed. Licensing negotiations followed, with Apple reportedly paying $21 million for rights. The incident demonstrated the design's value and legal protection.

evo Collection

The evo collection refined the original design for contemporary tastes: slightly updated proportions, sapphire crystals, and premium finishing. These evolutions maintained the essential character while addressing modern expectations.

Helvetica

Mondaine introduced watches using Helvetica typography—the typeface designed in Switzerland that became globally ubiquitous. These designs celebrate another Swiss design achievement alongside railways heritage.

Sustainability Focus

Modern Mondaine emphasizes sustainability: recycled materials, renewable energy in manufacturing, vegan straps. This environmental consciousness aligns with Swiss values and appeals to design-conscious consumers concerned about impact.

Mondaine Today

Mondaine offers the Swiss Railways design across various sizes, complications, and price points—from affordable quartz to premium automatics. For those wanting iconic Swiss design, unmistakable visual identity, and genuine Swiss heritage, Mondaine provides unique value.
