The History of Louis Moinet

Louis Moinet honors a 19th-century watchmaker who may have invented the chronograph. The modern brand, founded in 2004, creates cosmic-themed timepieces featuring actual meteorite fragments, moon dust, and Mars rock.

The Historical Moinet

Louis Moinet (1768-1853) was a French watchmaker and author of the influential "Traité d'Horlogerie." In 2013, a pocket watch he created in 1816 was authenticated as potentially the first chronograph—predating the commonly credited invention by Nicolas Rieussec.

Modern Brand Founding

Jean-Marie Schaller founded the modern Louis Moinet brand in 2004, adopting the historical figure's name and astronomical interests. The brand would focus on cosmic themes—space materials, astronomical complications, and designs evoking celestial wonder.

Meteorite Dials

Louis Moinet specializes in dials cut from authentic meteorites. Each piece contains material billions of years old, formed in space before falling to Earth. The Widmanstätten patterns—crystalline structures unique to meteorites—create dials impossible to replicate artificially.

Space Fragments

Beyond meteorites, Louis Moinet has incorporated fragments of actual lunar material, Mars rock (from meteorites originating on Mars), and space shuttle components. These watches contain certified pieces of extraterrestrial origin.

Memoris

The Memoris chronograph honors Louis Moinet's historical invention with the mechanism visible on the dial side rather than hidden beneath. This reversal celebrates the chronograph's mechanical beauty.

Limited Editions

Most Louis Moinet pieces are limited editions—often extremely limited. Some unique pieces incorporate the rarest space materials and command six-figure prices. The brand positions itself at haute horlogerie's creative edge.

Astronomical Complications

Beyond material novelty, Louis Moinet creates astronomical complications: world timers, perpetual calendars, and displays showing planetary positions. These connect to the historical Moinet's astronomical interests.

Louis Moinet Today

For collectors fascinated by space—wanting actual cosmic material on their wrists—Louis Moinet offers something literally otherworldly. These aren't just themed watches but contain genuine fragments of the universe.
