The History of Grönefeld

Brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld represent something rare in watchmaking: genuine independent craftsmen creating movements from scratch in their Dutch workshop. Their work stands alongside the finest Swiss independents while maintaining distinctly Dutch character.

Family Heritage

The Grönefeld family has worked in watchmaking for three generations. Bart and Tim's grandfather restored antique clocks; their father continued the tradition. The brothers trained as watchmakers before spending years working for prestigious Swiss brands—gaining skills they would later apply independently.

Going Independent

In 2008, Bart and Tim launched Grönefeld in Oldenzaal, Netherlands. Their first creation, the GTM-06, demonstrated their ability to create complete movements in-house—an achievement few independent brands can claim.

One Hertz

The One Hertz, with its independently-beating seconds, earned Grönefeld a Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève award. The movement features a dead-beat seconds complication—the seconds hand jumps once per second rather than sweeping—executed with exceptional refinement.

Principia

The Principia collection offers Grönefeld craftsmanship at relatively accessible pricing. "Relative" because these remain luxury watches, but they bring the brothers' hand-finishing and movement quality to buyers who couldn't access their higher complications.

Hand Finishing

What distinguishes Grönefeld is hand-finishing executed by the brothers themselves. Every bevel, every polished surface, every engraved text is done by hand in their small workshop. This isn't marketing—it's two craftsmen doing the work themselves.

Distinctive Aesthetics

Grönefeld watches have distinctive visual character—guilloche dials, flame-blued screws, and a design sensibility that feels neither purely Swiss nor aggressively modern. They look like nothing else, in the best way.

Limited Production

The brothers produce perhaps 50-100 watches annually. Each piece receives extensive personal attention. This isn't a limitation—it's the point. Mass production is antithetical to their approach.

Collector Recognition

Serious collectors prize Grönefeld for the combination of genuine craftsmanship, independent spirit, and relatively accessible pricing compared to Swiss independents of similar quality. Waiting lists exist because demand exceeds their deliberate production capacity.

Grönefeld Today

Working from their Netherlands workshop, Bart and Tim continue creating watches that honor traditional craftsmanship while expressing their own vision. For collectors who value the human hand over industrial production, Grönefeld offers something increasingly rare: watches made by identifiable craftsmen who do the work themselves.
