The History of De Bethune

De Bethune creates watches that look like they arrived from the future. Founded in 2002, this small Swiss manufacture has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative watchmakers in existence—developing proprietary materials and mechanisms that push mechanical watchmaking's boundaries.

Founded on Innovation

David Zanetta and Denis Flageollet founded De Bethune in 2002 with a clear mission: advance mechanical watchmaking through genuine innovation rather than incremental refinement. Flageollet, the technical mastermind, brings inventive genius that has resulted in dozens of patents.

The brand's name references Chevalier de Béthune, a 17th-century French horologist who improved spring mechanisms.

Silicon Pioneers

De Bethune was among the first to adopt silicon for critical movement components. Their silicon balance wheel and escape wheel eliminate the need for lubrication in the escapement, improving accuracy and longevity. They weren't following a trend—they were creating one.

The De Bethune Balance Wheel

The brand's distinctive balance wheel—often visible through the dial—features a unique design with white gold weights on a titanium structure. This provides optimal mass distribution while remaining visually striking. It's become a De Bethune signature.

Mirror-Polished Titanium

De Bethune pioneered the technique of polishing titanium to a mirror finish—previously considered impossible due to the metal's properties. Their blued titanium cases combine light weight with stunning aesthetics no other brand matches.

The DB28

The DB28 exemplifies De Bethune's approach: a case that seems to float on the wrist, crown at 12 o'clock, spherical moon phase that shows the moon's actual appearance from Earth, and that distinctive visible balance wheel. It looks like no other watch.

Dream Watches

The Dream Watch series pushed boundaries further—tourbillons floating within the case, three-dimensional celestial displays, and mechanisms that seem to defy gravity. These aren't production pieces but expressions of what mechanical watchmaking can achieve.

Recognition

De Bethune has won multiple Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève awards, including the "Aiguille d'Or" (best in show). The watch industry's highest recognition validates their innovative approach.

Small Scale, Big Impact

De Bethune produces only around 200 watches annually—each essentially hand-made by a small team of specialists. This limited production means most collectors will never own one, but the brand's innovations influence watchmaking broadly.

De Bethune Today

Under current ownership, De Bethune continues pushing boundaries while maintaining the small-scale, innovation-focused approach that defines them. For collectors seeking genuinely different watchmaking—pieces that advance the art rather than simply refine it—De Bethune offers something found nowhere else.
