Water Resistance Explained
Understanding water resistance ratings is crucial for protecting your watch. Here's what those numbers really mean.
Water Resistance Ratings
| Rating | Safe For |
|---|---|
| 30m / 3 ATM | Splashes, rain only - NOT swimming |
| 50m / 5 ATM | Swimming, showering |
| 100m / 10 ATM | Swimming, snorkeling |
| 200m / 20 ATM | Recreational scuba diving |
| 300m+ / 30+ ATM | Professional diving |
Important
Water resistance is tested under static conditions. Movement, temperature changes, and aging gaskets all reduce real-world resistance. When in doubt, keep your watch dry.
Maintaining Water Resistance
- Annual testing — Have gaskets checked yearly for dive watches
- After service — Always test after any case-opening service
- Avoid hot water — Steam and hot tubs can damage gaskets
- Screw down crowns — Always ensure crowns are fully secured
