Common Watch Care Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes with their first nice watch. But some mistakes can be costly or permanently damage your timepiece. Here are the most common errors and how to avoid them.

01

Thinking "Water Resistant" Means "Waterproof"

A 50m water resistant watch can NOT go 50 meters underwater. These ratings are based on static pressure tests, not real swimming conditions.

The Fix: 30m = splash only. 50m = light swimming. 100m+ for real water activities. Always screw down crowns first.
02

Never Wearing the Watch "To Keep It Nice"

Not wearing your mechanical watch is worse than wearing it. Lubricants congeal when the watch sits still for months. Gaskets dry out.

The Fix: Wear regularly or wind at least once a month. Rotate through your collection.
03

Over-Tightening the Crown

Cranking screw-down crowns as tight as possible wears threads and damages gaskets.

The Fix: Screw gently until you feel resistance. Think "snug," not "tight."
04

Using Chronograph Pushers Underwater

Unless specifically designed for it, chronograph pushers aren't sealed for underwater use.

The Fix: Never press pushers underwater unless your watch is specifically rated for it.
05

Setting the Date at Night

Quick-setting the date between 9pm-3am can strip the date wheel gears.

The Fix: Set time to 6:00 first, then adjust date, then set correct time.
06

Storing on Hard Surfaces

Tossing your watch on nightstands creates micro-scratches over time.

The Fix: Always place on soft surfaces—watch roll, cushion, or microfiber cloth.
07

Cleaning with Harsh Chemicals

Window cleaner and alcohol products damage gaskets and strip coatings.

The Fix: Use only lukewarm water, mild soap, and soft cloths.
08

Skipping Professional Service

Assuming a running watch doesn't need service. Lubricants degrade whether you notice or not.

The Fix: Follow manufacturer intervals (typically 5-7 years). Preventive maintenance prevents expensive problems.

Learning from Mistakes

If you've made some of these mistakes, don't panic. Most are easily corrected. The important thing is to learn and adjust your habits going forward. Your first luxury watch is the beginning of a journey—treat it with care and it will reward you for years.
