How to Wind an Automatic Watch

While automatic watches wind themselves through wear, manual winding ensures full power reserve.

Steps

  1. Unscrew the crown if screw-down (common on dive watches)
  2. Turn the crown clockwise (away from you)
  3. Wind 30-40 turns until you feel resistance
  4. Stop when resistance increases—don't force it
  5. Screw the crown back down if applicable

Note

Most modern automatics have a slipping clutch that prevents overwinding, but it's still best practice to stop at resistance.
