How to Store Watches Correctly

Where you store your watch matters almost as much as how you wear it. Proper storage protects against dust, humidity, scratches, and accidental damage. Here's how to keep your watches safe.

The Ideal Storage Environment

Temperature: Room temperature (65-75°F) is ideal. Avoid heat sources and direct sunlight. Heat damages lubricants and gaskets.

Humidity: Moderate humidity (40-60%) is best. Too humid risks moisture damage; too dry cracks leather straps. Consider silica gel packets.

Light: UV light fades dials. Store in closed boxes away from windows, especially vintage watches.

Magnetism: Keep watches 5-10cm from phones, speakers, and laptops to avoid magnetization.

Storage Options

Original Watch Box

Perfect fit, free, and maintains resale value. However, not practical for collections and takes space.

Watch Box / Display Case

Look for soft lining (microfiber or velvet), secure closure, and individual cushions. Great for organization but glass tops expose to light.

Watch Roll

Compact, portable, and great for travel. Limited capacity but stylish and protective.

Watch Winder

Keeps automatic watches wound when not worn. Useful for complicated watches with perpetual calendars. Not necessary for simple automatics.

Do You Need a Watch Winder?

Only if you have automatic watches with complications that are tedious to reset (perpetual calendars, moon phases). For simple date watches, manual winding when needed works fine.

What NOT to Do

Don't store crystal-down: Always place watches crown-side up on soft surfaces.

Don't stack watches: Even in soft pouches, stacking risks scratches and pressure damage.

Don't store wet: Always dry your watch completely before putting it away.

Don't forget about them: Mechanical watches need occasional winding even in storage.

Long-Term Storage Tips

If storing a watch for months, wind it fully first, then store in its original box with silica gel. Check every few months—give it a wind and inspection.

For leather straps, apply conditioner before long-term storage to prevent drying and cracking.

Storage Checklist

  • Clean watch before storing
  • Ensure crown is pushed in/screwed down
  • Wind mechanical watches
  • Store away from magnets and electronics
  • Use soft-lined box or cushion
  • Keep in cool, dry, dark location
  • Check stored watches monthly

Proper storage is simple once you establish good habits. Your watches will stay in better condition, require less frequent service, and be ready to wear whenever you reach for them.
